SSC.jpg

That was the nature of SSC lore — you saw its effect and guessed at its cause. In a narrow room that overlooked the facility floors was a small carpeted dais; we guessed it was for one person, an overseer, whose sole function was to stand all day on that dais, observing the floor below. The guide who’d been struggling to recall that book about the SSC resigned to forward me the information some other time. Last ditch, he canvassed the others. No one could remember the name, but everyone knew it was a novel.

I went to Waxahachie, TX to write about the abandoned Super Conducing Supercollider and its afterimage within that community (published in the Texas Monthly.) (2013)
